Best time visit Mongolia
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT?
The main travel season starts in late spring from the end of May and lasts until Autumn, somewhere around the beginning to the middle of September. At the end of May, and during June, you will enjoy lush flourishing meadows and the high probability of encountering a yak or camel caravan of nomads, as they move from spring to summer pastures. September offers wonderful autumn foliage, and again, a good chance of catching sight of the nomads, this time moving from summer to autumn pastures. The winter months, when temperatures can dip well below -30°C (-22°F), Mongolia has much to offer. In the heart of winter, Mongolians celebrate their traditional Lunar New Year Festival. Another three unique festivals take place during this time - the Golden Eagle Festival at Ulaanbaatar, the Ice Festival at Lake Khuvsgul, and the Thousand Camels Festival in the Gobi Desert. Traveling through Mongolia during the winter months is not an easy task but is well worth it.
WHAT SORT OF WEATHER SHOULD I EXPECT?
Summer: Mongolia is geographically the farthest country from any sea. Hence, its continental weather is very difficult to predict. Its distance from the ocean ensures a very dry climate where you hardly sweat, even on the hottest days. During the summer months, the temperature is comfortable during the day while the nights might be slightly chilly. Although the summer is the rainy season in Mongolia, the country enjoys relatively low levels of precipitation. Even on rainy days, you would usually see several light showers, and your trip shouldn’t be adversely affected by rainfall.
Winter: In winter Mongolia is cold but extremely beautiful. During the winter months, November – March, temperatures could drop to as low as -30°C (-22°F) and never climb above 0°C (32°F) for several months, so snow that fall stick and stay until the following summer. It’s the wind that makes a significant difference when staying outside. But if well prepared you are in paradise, though a very cold one.
